Katanning Miniature Railway Inc.
RUNS ON THE 2ND & 4TH SUNDAYS OF EACH MONTH (weather permitting).
RIDES: $1.00 FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS.
The Katanning Miniature Railway was started by Len Toms about twenty years ago after he built 'NUFF PUFF'. Len approached the Katanning Shire for land to build a 71/4 inch gauge track. it was decided to lay the track at the All Ages Playground. in 1990 the Kendenup Railway Station was bought by the Shire and placed next to the track and a small shed for rolling stock was built. Until 1996 Len with his wife Betty and different people helping them, gave rides to children on Sunday afternoons.
In 1995 it was decided to form a Miniature Railway club to run the railway. Len Towns was first President and Julie Stock Secretary/Treasurer.
In 2000 the club received a grant from the Centenary of Federation Committee to build a new museum come workshop storage area. The new building was opened on March 25th 2001 by the Honorable Hendy Cowan MLC with a fun day.
Now we have twelve members and Tony Stock is President and Julie Still Secretary/Treasurer, We now run four engines, NUFF PUFF and a mock Diesel engine built by Len. Another steam engine called "Scrounger" and a mock diesel engine called "BITSNPIECES" both built by Tony.
In June 2002 we received a grant from the W.A. Lotteries Commission to extend the station building roof out over the railway lines at the station. On 27th October 2002 we held a fun day and the extensions were opened by Liz Guidera the Shire President.
Devonshire Teas and cold drinks are sold from the station kitchen. in winter come and sit by the fire while you enjoy your afternoon tea. In summer sit under our shaded area and watch the trains go by while enjoying a cold drink.
In 2004 we purchased a ride on lawn tractor with a Volunteer Small Equipment grant and in December 2006 a Welder Generator was purchased with a grant from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal. This equipment has made it easier for us to replace sleepers around the track and replace the timber on one of the bridges. It also helps us maintain the grounds.
The highlight for the year was on Australia Day 2007 when Julie, on behalf of our members, received from the Katanning Shire President Phil Rae, the award for the Premiers Australia Day Active Citizenship Award, for a community group or event in Katanning. our members have worked hard to be recognized over the years and they deserve to be recognized for their hard work.
The members of the Katanning Miniature Railway invites you to come and join our club. We need people we can train as guards, drivers & helpers in our kitchen, or if you have spare time to help with our busy bees on Wednesday mornings. Please ring Tony or speak to any of our members.
There is free fun at the All Ages Playgound. Come along and have a great time on the slides and swings for all age groups.
Free BBQ facilities are available so bring your family and friends: enjoy a picknick at the playgound.
Next to the playground is a Skate Park and a BMX track.
For a fun time, join us on the 2nd & the 4th Sunday of the month & ride the miniature trains around our 800 metre track and afterwards enjoy afternoon tea or a cold drink while watching the trains.
